Specialize yourself as an urban professional! This course offers the opportunity to join part of the specialisation period of the master programme in Urban Management and Development.
The modules of the master program guarantee the academic depth of the study, while at the same time complementary activities of more practical focus are build in the program to link the learning to your own work environment. The programme provides an excellent opportunity to review and further develop your professional skills as an urban manager.
Courses in the different specializations on housing, land, regional and urban environmental strategies will be paired with case studies, field trips and group discussions. If academic standards are met,the candidate may complete the master program at a later date.

An assessment may be required for any of the programmes at Erasmus University. This depends on the course you wish to sign up for and on the file that you send us as part of your application. A file should contain your academic background and relevant test-scores, such as TOEFL/IELTS, a letter of motivation and letters of reference.

2. Specialisation Period
There are two periods with each a four weeks specialisation course. Participants have to follow one compulsory course in their own specialisation, while the second course is an optional to be selected from the other specialisations in offer. In this way participants can specialize in their professional field but at the same time have an opportunity to broaden their horizon in another subject of relevance and interest.
Designed for urban professionals with at least 3 years of working or research experience, this course offers the opportunity to join part of the specialization period of the MSc programme in Urban Management and Development. Participants can tailor the study programme to their own needs and interest by choosing two of the six offered specialization courses
The course combines academic depth while maintaining a practical focus. Participants can chose between: 1) Urban Environmental and Infrastructure Management; 2) Managing Urban Governance; 3) Housing: Making it Accessible for All; 4) Urban Social Development and 5) Policies for Poverty Reduction.
The course has a practical orientation, combining field experience with conceptual frameworks and methodologies. Lecturers will introduce key topics, which will be reinforced by readers, case studies, group discussions, assignments and exercises designed to draw on the accumulated expertise of the students.

To gain latest thinking in urban management and development, housing, strategic planning and have improved capacity to plan cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder activities. If academic standards have been met, the participant will be awarded with credits for the Master course of Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), Erasmus University Rotterdam.
IHS educates participants from all over the world and can boost an alumni netwerk of over 7400 urban professionals in over 140 countries. Also the staff members and guest lecturers are either internationals or partly educated abroad. The case studies that are shared are retrieved from different urban regions around the world taking intercultural differences and similarities into account. You can therefore safely conclude that you will study in an international environment.
IHS Alumni International (IHS AI) is a network of urban professionals that was established in 2009 in response to the need for all IHS alumni to stay connected. It's primary aim is fostering professional ideas and support.
It's objective and slogan is 'sharing urban knowledge' internationally.
