The course offers developed and applied urban management knowledge in the fields of Urban Policy and Planning, Local Government Finance, Economic and Financial Analysis. Urban Social Studies, Public Management, and Sustainable Cities and Climate Change.
The aim of the course is to strengthen the contribution that cities and towns make towards economic growth and social development. It provides a unique opportunity for participants to grasp what they need to know to become innovative urban managers. An assessment may be required for any of the programmes at Erasmus University. This depends on the course you wish to sign up for and on the file that you send us as part of your application. A file should contain your academic background and relevant test-scores, such as GMAT and/or TOEFL/IELTS, a letter of motivation and letters of reference.
The course joins the first three months of the Master of Science in Urban Management and Development. It comprises class room sessions in large international groups of participants, exercises, group work, individual work and field visits. Each course is examined and graded
Urban Development Theories, including development theory, city life cycle, urban competitiveness, urban networking and informality; Urban Policy and Planning, including the policy cycle, participative planning and action planning; Local Government Finance; Economic and Financial Analysis; Urban Social Studies; Public Management; Sustainable Cities and Climate Change.

IHS is engaged in over 100 urban programmes and projects at any point in time, enabling a direct link between theory and practice. IHS lecturers have worked all over the world thus creating a possibility to discuss and initiate programmes and projects in your country and your cities.
By the end of the course, participants know the latest theories on urban management and development. They will be able to critically evaluate these theories and assess their relevance for the local condition. With this theoretical underpinning, participants will be enabled to analyse urban policies, argue a multi stakeholder approach, analyse governance and planning structures and develop neighborhood action plans.
IHS educates participants from all over the world and can boost an alumni netwerk of over 7400 urban professionals in over 140 countries. Also the staff members and guest lecturers are either internationals or partly educated abroad. The case studies that are shared are retrieved from different urban regions around the world taking intercultural differences and similarities into account. You can therefore safely conclude that you will study in an international environment.
IHS Alumni International (IHS AI) is a network of urban professionals that was established in 2009 in response to the need for all IHS alumni to stay connected. It's primary aim is fostering professional ideas and support.
It's objective and slogan is 'sharing urban knowledge' internationally.
