A financial manager has to know how risk is defined, what the links are between risk and the opportunity costs of capital, and he/she can cope with risk in practical situations. In order to be accepted, projects need to show a positive net present value, and thus increase the firm's value. Another question is how dividend policy affects a firm's value. Dividend decisions are often mixed up with investment and financing decisions, but dividend policy should be isolated from other problems of financial management. The choice of capital structure is fundamentally a marketing problem: the firm can issue dozens of securities in countless combinations, but it attempts to find the particular combination of equity and debt that maximises the firm's overall value. The financial courses provides insight, knowledge and analytical skills related to how a corporation's senior executives design and implement the ongoing management systems that are used to plan and control the firm's performance.
