The two-year programme Educational Sciences focuses on how learning occurs in formal and informal education contexts across the life-span. It provides you with up-to-date knowledge of learning processes, how these processes are regulated by cognitive, affective, social and cultural factors, and how real-time processes shape development on a larger time-scale. The programme concentrates on the interaction between educators, learners and learning materials, including various types of media and ICT. You can also specialise in learning disabilities or in the societal aspects of education. Dutch students choosing the clinical specialisation can obtain a clinical degree.

In this programme, you are taught in small groups by our best researchers, which allows for individual attention, plenty of interaction, and intensive collaboration. You will participate in Utrecht University's multidisciplinary education and learning sciences community.

curriculum

Besides courses on education and learning theories, research practicals will learn you to apply advanced assessment technology, such as eye-tracking and EEG; to use observational methods; to get acquainted with qualitative methods for, for instance, discourse analysis; and to work with state-of-the-art methodological and statistical tools. At the end of the programme, you will write a thesis that is supervised by an internationally renowned senior research fellow.

job perspective

About 80% of our graduates of the past years are employed as PhD researchers. Others found employment in institutes for applied research or in education policy.
