Our LLM programme in European Law, taught entirely in English, will immerse you in this challenging and dynamic field. It provides a thorough grounding in European law.The programme provides a thorough grounding in European law, covering areas such as internal market law, competition law, social law, judicial protection, human rights law, criminal law, and public law. Our unique programme will help you build both substantive and institutional knowledge of European law while giving you an opportunity to analyse European law in relation to the legal systems of the Member States. The flexibility of this programme means that you will be able to focus on areas of personal interest. For example, you may choose to take a specialisation or courses from our other master's programmes to create a custom minor.

A compulsory part worth 30 EC that comprises two compulsory major courses (15 EC), Capita Selecta (4 short modules worth 10 EC) and European Labour Law or the ELMC/NVER Moot Court (5 EC)
A specialisation or Master's–minor (15 EC)
A Research and Thesis Training (worth 15 EC)

Utrecht University Law School plays an active and significant role in innovative, multi-dimensional legal research that contributes to ongoing solutions for important societal issues. This LLM is based upon two pillars; the institutional and substantive law of the EU and its relationship with national law. Learning by doing is key to this programme and as such knowledge and understanding gained through theoretical modules is complemented by training in legal analysis, argumentation and research.

This one-year Master's programme starts in September. The academic year consists of these compulsory courses: Regulating the EU's Single Market Constitutional Law of the European Union and The Capita Selecta which consists of four short courses. A Research and Thesis Training that runs throughout the Master's programme. And 2 elective courses: Judicial Protection and Enforcement of EU Law or European Competition Law or a Master's minor which is a courses of another programme.

Even before you graduate, the LLM in European Law will have given you a good introduction to professional practice through moot courts, visits to major European organisations, and the chance to speak with top-ranking professional lawyers. As a result, you will be well prepared for a legal career either in your home country or internationally.

In addition the relationship between European law and national law will be thoroughly analysed. It also offers the opportunity to carry out in-depth analysis through participation in courses on more specialised topics.

instruction modes

Lectures, research, seminars, discussions, active participation. The student takes 2 required courses and 3 optional courses out of a predetermined list and writes a thesis.

The master in European Law is a chance to learn from other legal cultures because, in this programme, there are students from all over the world. There are also often guest lectures from experts in the field. The study trip abroad is often used as occasion to find an internship or job in Brussels or Luxembourg.
