Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA)

Universiteit Utrecht

  • Beschrijving
  • Overzicht

The master program Geographical Information Management and Applications focuses on the management and application of geographical information from a scientific perspective.

In Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA), students will be introduced to the theoretical, methodological, technological and organisational principles of processing and analyzing digital geo-information, the management and research aspects of geo-information, and the innovative application of geo-information in a wide variety of spatial application fields.

Furthermore, GIMA is a blended learning Master's programme, which means that most of the time students are studying from the place where students think they can study best (e.g. at home, or the local library). Students study full time (2 yrs.) or part time (4 yrs.).

A compulsory internship allows the student to gain practical experience in a (geo-information) working environment. The internship is carried out within geo-information companies, agencies and research institutes in the Netherlands or abroad. The student submits a report about the internship.

1st year

The study programme comprises six course modules in the first year (60 ECTS in total).

characteristics

There are two aspects which make GIMA a unique program: the blended learning concept and the co-operation between four renowned Dutch universities. The GIMA Master's programme is a joint venture of four Dutch Universities. Utrecht University, as well as Delft University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University, each bring their expertise to the table for GIMA.

curriculum

The GIMA programme is a two-year programme, and is offered as blended learning. At the beginning of each module there are 3 contact days in which the lectures are being held and the assignments explained. After that there is a period of distance learning of approximately 12 weeks. In between, students work from their home or office. The interactivity is guaranteed by the use of electronic communication (e-learning environment) by which students regularly interact with teachers and fellow students. At the end of the module there are two examination days at one of the four universities.

internship

An internship is part of the curriculum and takes place in the first half of the second year of the programme.

job perspective

Experience has also shown that many GIMA course participants are offered jobs with the company or organisation where they did their internship. If only for this reason, GIMA allows students to end the programme with the internship instead of with the thesis. Because of the fact that the internship is such an important element of GIMA, the programme maintains intensive contacts with potential internship providers and these providers have learned that vacancy announcements can quickly be made through GIMA communication channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Blackboard electronic learning environment).
