Methodology and Statistics for the Behavioural, Biomedical and Social Sciences

Universiteit Utrecht

  • Beschrijving
  • Overzicht

This Master's programme familiarises you with issues of research design and data collection, analysis methods and statistical tools as applied to behavioural, biomedical and social sciences.

The field of methodology and statistics is by its nature interdisciplinary, as it relates to all fields of behavioural, biomedical and social research. Social science methodology concentrates on central issues in research design and data collection, with the aim of improving the quality of empirical research. In addition, the complex theories and research designs currently used call for advanced analysis methods, which in turn require mastery of the statistical foundations of these methods, and training in their skilled use.

characteristics

Utrecht University is the only Dutch University that has been awarded a EMOS (European Master of Offical Statistics) label from Eurostat for their track in Official Statistics. This is statistics as it is carried out at statistical bureaus such as Statistics Netherlands and planning bureaus. Students at Utrecht experience the research culture at three different departments, in small interactive classes with teachers who are renowned in their field.

curriculum

In the second year of studies, students have the option to design their own programme by creating a track in the field of their interest, for example, survey research, educational measurements, biomedical research, but this space can also be filled by following our predefined track: Official Statistics (which has a European Master of Official Statistics label).

job perspective

Some graduates have chosen non-academic careers. For example, many work at CITO and Statistics Netherlands as statistical consultants or have teaching jobs at the University. Through the development of specialisation tracks, Utrecht University has reinforced connections with non-academic institutions that are potential employers of our students. Thus, we are creating improved job opportunities for our students at institutions like CITO, RCEC, CentERData, Statistics Netherlands, TNO, and UMCU.

objectives

In this Master's programme you will develop the skills and knowledge to function as a qualified practitioner who is ready for PhD training or a research career outside academia.
