characteristics

The Master's programme in Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism is one of the oldest and most established social science Research Master's programmes in the Netherlands. It has an excellent national and international reputation and receives high rankings in national surveys of both students and experts (professors from other universities) each year. In the Keuzegids Masters 2013, it was rated as one of the best Master's programmes in the Social Sciences (score 79) and was categorised as “Topopleiding 2013” ("Top training 2013").

DISTINCT FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME
* It has an interdisciplinary nature - in particular a combination of social sciences (sociology, political science) and behavioural sciences (social and cultural psychology).
* You will learn about the processes of migration, ethnic relations and multiculturalism in relation to each other.
* It offers extensive training in advanced methods and statistical modelling.
* It provides close connections to a research centre with a high-quality research programme (European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations/ICS).

curriculum

Each semester of the first year ends with a research practical of four weeks that focuses on the integration of the three previous courses of the respective semester. More precisely, statistical models covered in the methods and statistics course of each respective semester are applied in the research domains covered in the courses on theory and the application of theory in empirical research (of that respective semester), using existing data sets.

In the elective, you can select a course from another Master's programme, follow a relevant Summer School, or undertake a traineeship within a team of researchers in a research institute (within a university setting).

The thesis takes the form of an article that (in principle) can be submitted to an international journal.

job perspective

As our graduate you are well-prepared to enter the job market: our graduates have been very successful in gaining employment in the Netherlands and abroad as PhD researchers, researchers outside the university system, trainees, consultants, and at NGOs.

objectives

Research training in the field of migration processes, ethnic relations (acculturation, integration and ethnic conflict) and multiculturalism. MSc's are trained in statistical analysis of comparative data in order to test theories and explanations of relevant processes. The MSc prepares for further PhD training in the field of migration, ethnic relations and multiculturalism.

sustainable strengthening

There will be a specific answer for each graduate, but generally speaking participation in an international high quality Master programme will increase his or her professional knowledge in the field of (im)migration and the management of ethnic-cultural diversity. Since the employer plays an important role in the application procedure, it is expected that the organisation will benefit from the upgrading of its employee.
