The Master's in Musicology allows students the freedom to conduct research in their chosen field of study, such as the music of India or the development of modern twentieth century compositions.The Master's programme Musicology focuses on intercultural music across a wide range of topics, including world music, contemporary expressions of music, western classical music of all periods, theory of music, cognition, cultural musicology, music theory, performance practice, pop and jazz.
The programme is aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of one particular area of musicology, and allows participating students the freedom to conduct further research in their chosen field of study, such as the music of India or the development of modern twentieth century compositions.

Students choose three out of six main subjects and one elective (which can be from the remaining main subjects).
Core courses provide a theoretical background, while practical skills can be honed at several institutions,
for instance the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, the Walter Maas Huis in Bilthoven (a location for various
kinds of contemporary music practice)or the research institute of the Conservatory of Rotterdam.


The programme comprises 60 ECTS credits:

* 30 credits for courses in Musicology
* 12 credits for electives in Musicology or another discipline
* 18 credits for a Master's thesis

Courses are taught in the form of seminars, in groups of 10 to 15 students.

job perspective

Graduates will be qualified to pursue a career in one of the diverse artistic and cultural sectors, such as radio, television and the printed media, or to work as an adviser or manager of orchestras, opera companies, agencies, concert halls and cultural organisations. Research careers at universities, schools of professional education, academic libraries, schools of music, conservatories and museums are also possible.
