Intertwined spatial developments of urbanisation and globalisation processes are central to the Human Geography curriculum.


Geography is all about studying people, space and place - and Amsterdam is the perfect place to do that. First of all the city of Amsterdam itself is the perfect location and junction to study, explore, experience geography. Secondly, the University of Amsterdam, a major research university, offers a Master's programme taught by one of the highest ranked geography departments in continental Europe. Last but not least, the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) of Amsterdam provides a vibrant and international academic community. The GSSS values diversity in both research and academic content, academic staff and student population.


In the Master's programme Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam, students choose one out of four specialisation tracks:

Economic Geography: Global Production Networks and Clusters

Environmental Geography: Governance for Sustainability

Political Geography: Geopolitics, Globalisation and Governance

Urban Geography: Global and Local Perspectives on Cities

job perspective

Graduates of Human Geography qualify as scientific researchers of socio-spatial themes. In many cases, graduates secure research positions at public organisations and private firms. Potential employers range from ministries, provinces and municipalities to housing corporations, consultancy firms and NGOs. Other job possibilities are policy advisor, journalist, teaching geography at secondary schools (after completing the education Master's) or expert in geographical information systems.

objectives

Students will advance their knowledge in geographic information systems with respect to key issues in Human Geography which will assist tyou in solving spatial problems. Understanding the geographical context and applying geographical knowledge to societal issues are relevant competencies in dealing with contemporary spatial issues in cities and a globalising world.
