The central aim of the programme is to train a new generation of lawyers who have obtained a broad and deep understanding of international criminal law issues and developed their academic skills.


The Master's programme in International Criminal Law is the first programme of its kind to focus on international criminal law as a distinct field of legal study. The central aim of the programme is to train a new generation of international criminal lawyers who have obtained a broad and deep understanding of international criminal law issues and developed academic skills by analysing such issues.

This is accomplished by utilising a dual perspective on international criminal law: a common law and criminal law oriented focus at Columbia University, and a civil law and criminal law perspective at the Amsterdam Law School.

admission

The programme is open to 8 EU nationals applying through the Amsterdam Law School. Students who will obtain their LLB before 1 August, and graduate with at least a 7,5 grade average (on a scale of 1-10) can apply for the programme. US students should enrol for the programme via Columbia Law School instead.

curriculum

12 AC in courses are obtained at Columbia Law School. 30 ECTS credits are obtained at Amsterdam Law School, for courses such as International Criminal Law, International Criminal Tribunals: Substantive Aspects and International Criminal Tribunals: Procedural Aspects.

The programme prepares students for a career in international criminal law. Graduates will be uniquely qualified to assume leadership roles in the world of international criminal tribunals, such as the ICC, national practice, academia and ministries of foreign affairs, justice and defence.
