The Master's programme in Conflict Studies and Human Rights focuses on the analysis of contemporary violent conflict with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of violence.

The Master's programme in Conflict Studies and Human Rights is a selective, international graduate programme combining the study of theory with in-depth case study analysis.

The programme focuses on both the dynamics of violent conflicts and the problems associated with national and international military or humanitarian intervention by agencies such as the UN, NATO, or non-governmental organisations.

The Utrecht Programme is judged best in the field in the Netherlands by the Keuzegids Master's Selection Guide 2016.

In your first semester, you take six compulsory courses. In your second semester, you are given the freedom to select a programme trajectory of your choice, for example: 1. research & thesis writing only 2. one elective and research & thesis writing 3. one elective, internship of 5-6 weeks and research & thesis writing 4. two electives and research & thesis writing 5. internship of 10-12 weeks and research & thesis writing.

The Master in Conflict Studies and Human Rights offers good preparation for careers in any sector involving conflict analysis, including the public sector, business, non-governmental and international organisations.

The use of English as the working language of the programme will be an advantage for students who will later pursue a career in an international setting. Ministries, NGOs, businesses, and municipalities are increasingly recruiting students with a degree in Conflict Studies.


Graduates of the MA programme may work in a variety of settings where conflict analysis is useful: government, non-governmental organisations, international organizations. Students obtain knowledge about the competence that is required to work in international organizations.
