The brain is an immensely powerful and intricate processing device dedicated to the perception, transformation and storage of the indispensable information we use to interact with our environment.

The Research Master's programme in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers a broad selection of tracks that investigate all aspects of the field, from the molecule to the mind. The programme is unique in its interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates the fields of neuroscience, neurology, psychology, behavioural economics, linguistics, logic, computation and philosophy.

Why the UvA?
Students benefit from the wide-ranging, leading expertise available at the Amsterdam Brain and Cognition Center (ABC), the different research labs at the UvA and from the opportunity to participate in research projects led by internationally renowned ABC researchers. The Research Master's programme in Brain and Cognitive Sciences forms a challenging, interdisciplinary and international arena in which highly motivated researchers and students endeavour to understand the brain, its development and its disorders. The Research Master's programme in Brain and Cognitive Sciences is offered by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS), in close collaboration with the Amsterdam Brain and Cognition Center (ABC).

job perspective

Brain and Cognitive Sciences provides its graduates with the necessary tools to pursue an academic career (PhD programme) in cognitive and neurosciences or in a related discipline. In addition to an academic career, graduates of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences programme also find work in applied research. Graduates of this programme are especially suited to work in highly interdisciplinary areas due to their experience learning and conducting research in several disciplines.

study abroad

The second research project in year 2 is the most obvious choice for students to conduct abroad, when they choose to do part of the master programme abroad.

study association

The research master programme has its own student unnion: Cognito. Their aim is to unite students across fields and academic years in order to promote exchange of knowledge, interdisciplinary discussion and networking about cognition matters. They organize parties and group activities, find conferences to attend, and communicate with other universities to keep up to date with current research being conducted by peers.
